SOLID WASTE AUTHORITY (SWA) - HOSTS FREE LITHIUM BATTERY COLLECTION & DOCUMENT SHREDDING EVENT ON AUGUST 9, 2025 FROM 7:00am -12:00pm
Join the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County (SWA) to keep your lithium batteries out of our waste stream. There’s also an opportunity to safeguard your personal information by getting your documents shredded in real time for free.
Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025 from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m., Palm Beach County residents are encouraged to drop off their lithium batteries and can also get up to six boxes of personal documents shredded onsite. This free community event is at the SWA’s Education Center, 6751 N. Jog Road in West Palm Beach.
Lithium batteries may be found in mobile phones; laptops; tablets; computer peripherals; Bluetooth devices; smart wearables; cordless/handheld power tools; game controllers; digital cameras; greeting cards; electric toothbrushes; e-bikes; e-scooters; remote controls; keyless entry remotes; children’s toys; two-way radios; and wireless headphones, among others. If not properly disposed of, lithium batteries can cause fires in collection vehicles or at waste processing facilities. Electric vehicle batteries are not accepted at SWA facilities and must be brought back to the dealer.
It is recommended to place non-conductive clear tape on the terminals of batteries to avoid them touching and causing a fire. It is also advisable to place lithium batteries in separate plastic bags for the same precaution. Commercial quantities of batteries may require special disposal. Call 561-687-1100 for details on recycling batteries from your business.
For those who also wish to have their personal documents shredded, only up to six boxes of documents will be accepted. These boxes are similar to those that hold reams of paper.
Residents will not have to get out of their vehicles at this event. SWA workers will take batteries and personal documents from the vehicle and place them into the battery collection drums and paper collection carts. Due to the anticipated volume of participants and limited parking available, it may not be possible to watch your specific personal documents get shredded. But the shredding will take place in real time onsite as the paper collection carts are filled.
