FBI WARNS OF BUILDING, PLANNING & ZONING PERMIT PHISHING SCAM BY FAKE CITY AND COUNTY OFFICIALS
The FBI has issued a warning about a phishing scam in which criminals pose as city and county officials to target people applying for planning and zoning permits. The attackers use publicly available information to make their emails appear legitimate, referencing actual permit details and officials' names. Victims are asked to pay fees via wire transfer, peer-to-peer payment apps or cryptocurrency. The FBI advises verifying any fee requests directly with local government offices.
